“Bucher’s caoutchouc and latex work is reminiscent of the periodic shedding of the snake’s skin or the metamorphosis of butterflies and dragonflies, symbols that Bucher frequently employed. She further emphasised the association between her works and insects through her use of iridescent mother of pearl pigment. To the artist, these works represented moments of transformation and renewal and the detachment from the conventions and constraints of the past, as opposed to trauma or loss. Bucher said about the working process, ‘we cover and discover’.”

Honoring Helen Frankenthaler on what would have been her 95th birthday

“Helen Frankenthaler (December 12, 1928-December 27, 2011) was an influential American abstract painter known for her pivotal role in transitioning from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting. Renowned for her innovative soak-stain technique, she poured thinned paint onto unprimed canvas, creating ethereal, color-infused works that blurred the lines between paint and canvas. While primarily abstract, her art often hinted at figuration and landscape in subtle, personal ways. Her contributions significantly impacted contemporary art, cementing her legacy as a groundbreaking and inspiring figure in modern art history.”

“Throughout her long career, Frankenthaler experimented continuously. In addition to paintings on canvas and paper, she worked in a wide range of mediums, including ceramics, sculpture, tapestry, and especially printmaking. Hers was a significant voice in the mid-century “print renaissance” among American abstract artists, and she is particularly known for her woodcuts, in which she layered numerous colors in a manner that expanded the possibilities of the medium.”
